Dr Mitesh Makwana is a highly experienced Consultant Nephrologist with a robust background in managing large dialysis facilities and providing critical care for patients in intensive care units. He is currently practising as a Consultant - Nephrology at Manipal Hospitals, Sarjapur Road, Bengaluru. He has worked in prestigious institutions, where he is deeply dedicated to advancing nephrology education and significantly improving patient outcomes through the application of evidence-based practices and rigorous research.
Dr Makwana possesses extensive expertise in managing challenging, complex cases across all facets of nephrology, including General Nephrology, Dialysis, Kidney Transplantation, and Critical Care Nephrology. His proficiency extends to managing highly complex situations that require advanced life-support modalities, such as ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) and CRRT (Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy). His specialised nephrology training was obtained from the prestigious Muljibhai Patel Urological Hospital in Nadiad, where he honed his skills under the tutelage of renowned nephrologists.
Demonstrating a wide range of procedural skills, Dr Makwana has successfully performed over 100 native kidney and graft biopsies and is highly proficient in the insertion of DLC (Dual Lumen Catheter), TLC (Triple Lumen Catheter), Permanent Dialysis catheter and Peritoneal Dialysis Catheter. Furthermore, his brief training in Rheumatology helped him develop a unique holistic approach to managing patients requiring interdisciplinary care, ensuring comprehensive, integrated treatment strategies. He is an active and contributing member of several esteemed professional organisations, including the Indian Society of Nephrology, the International Society of Nephrology, and the American Society of Nephrology.

When should I see a kidney specialist?
It's worth seeing a nephrologist if you have diabetes or high blood pressure, a family history of kidney disease, protein or blood in your urine, swelling in the legs or face, or abnormal kidney results on a blood test. Early review often makes a big difference. [Adjust to your practice.]
Can chronic kidney disease be reversed?
In its early stages, kidney disease can often be slowed or stabilised with the right treatment and lifestyle changes. More advanced disease usually can't be reversed, but careful management can protect your remaining function and delay the need for dialysis. What tests are used to check kidney function?
Common tests include a blood test for creatinine and eGFR, a urine test for protein, and sometimes an ultrasound scan. These are simple, and I'll explain what each result means for you in plain terms.
Does every kidney patient eventually need dialysis?
No. Many people with kidney disease never need dialysis. The goal of treatment is to keep your kidneys working well for as long as possible, and dialysis is considered only when function drops significantly.
